CIG Supports Strong Nations in Africa with Senior Public Sector Leaders Programme

POTCHEFSTROOM (South Africa), 29 July 2024 – The Chandler Academy of Governance (CAG), the training arm of the Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG) welcomed 18 participants across 9 countries in Africa to the launch of the 2nd Strong Nations for Africa Programme (SNFAP) in South Africa. Designed and delivered in partnership with the African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM), the programme aims to build a community of African public sector leaders who are committed to improving the quality of national governance in their respective countries and provides a platform for senior African public sector leaders to share good practices in governance.


The opening ceremony of the programme was graced by the Honourable Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, Minister for the Public Service and Administration, Republic of South Africa, who applauded the programme’s collaborative approach across continents, and emphasised the importance of international partnerships and working together to nurture a culture of continuous learning and ensure the development of public sector leaders.

In turn, Mr. Wu Wei Neng, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CIG, spoke about CIG’s commitment and hopes for the programme:

"The name of this programme ‘Strong Nations for Africa’ indicates clearly our mission and our goal, which is to support progress and national strength and resilience within all countries in Africa."

Under the theme of ‘Understanding and Stewarding Strong Nations’, participants embarked on a week filled with robust discussions and exchanged insights with senior international and South African experts such as Ms Zukiswa Mqolomba, Deputy Chairperson, Public Service Commission of South Africa, Dr Botshabelo Maja, Deputy Director-General (Professional Support Services), National School of Government and CIG’s CEO, Mr Wu Wei Neng.‍


The classroom sessions were coupled with learning journeys to the Thusong Centre in Soweto township, a one-stop government service centre and to the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) where participants were received by and interacted with Ms. Yoliswa Makhasi, Director-General, DPSA. With the visits, participants had the opportunity to learn from and appreciate the challenges that the South African public service is facing in service delivery.
