CIG Delivers Lecture on Indonesia’s Progress Towards Effective Government

Dr Muhammad Taufiq, Acting Chairman, National Institute of Public Administration; and Mr Kenneth Sim, Managing Director (Strategy and Research), Chandler Institute of Governance, speaking at the lecture (top right)
- Indonesia’s score in the CGGI has improved between 2021 to 2024.
- Notwithstanding this, Indonesia’s overall rank fell to 48th in 2024, from 44th in 2021. This was largely due to the inclusion of several new countries in the Index in 2024, some of which performed better than Indonesia.
- Relative to peer countries, including those in the region, Indonesia has performed well in several areas including Leadership & Foresight, Robust Laws & Policies, and Financial Stewardship. There are opportunities for improvement in other areas, such as Global Influence & Reputation and Helping People Rise – the latter looks at outcomes that are important for individuals’ lives and livelihoods.

The lecture shared insights and perspectives on Indonesia’s performance over the last four years of the CGGI
The lecture included interactive discussion with participants. Among other areas, participants shared their perspectives on “good” government and the capabilities that matter most for effective government. Many of these echoed elements within the CGGI, such as the need for transparency and ethical leadership, although other themes also emerged such as effective human resource systems and policies.
